PENETRATING SUBARTICULAR EROSIONS IN THE ELBOW IN RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS*
Department of Physical Medicine and Rheumatology and Department of Diagnostic Radiology, University Hospital of Wales
Penetrating subcortical erosions may occur in juxta-articular bone in association with any joint in rheumatoid arthritis. Although the connection of these lesions with the joint cavity may not be apparent on routine radiography, it can be demonstrated by tomography. The features of these lesions occurring in the olecranon are described. In the absence of other radiological features of rheumatoid arthritis in the joint they may be mistaken for bone tumours. Large lesions give rise to mechanical weakness of bone which may result in pathological fracture.
