In this study of cell-mediated immunity in relation to skin rashes occurring during gold therapy, evidence is provided that immune sensitization to gold, as judged by the lymphocyte transformation test and macrophage migration inhibition test (MIF), may occur in a proportion of patients. Out of the 40 patients receiving gold, 14 developed rashes and 7 (50%) of these had abnormal immunological reactions.
