THE EFFECT OF PHENYLBUTAZONE, INDOMETHACIN AND IBUPROFEN ON LYMPHOCYTE STIMULATION BY PHYTOHAEMAGGLUTININ IN VITRO*

G. S. PANAYI and ANNE RIX

Guy's Arthritis Research Unit and Department of Medicine, The Medical School, Guy's Hospital, London SE1 9RT

Phenylbutazone, indomethacin and ibuprofen inhibit lymphocyte stimulation induced in vitro by phytohaemagglutinin. The results indicate that phenylbutazone and possibly ibuprofen may inhibit lymphocyte stimulation in vivo and that part of their effect in rheumatoid arthritis could be due to inhibition of lymphocyte function.

*Paper read at the Annual Meeting of the British Association for Rheumatology and Rehabilitation, London, April 1974.
