LACK OF CORRELATION OF ARTHROSCOPIC SYNOVIAL APPEARANCE WITH THERMOGRAPHY IN JOINT INFLAMMATION

Twenty-five patients referred for arthroscopy of a hot knee were studied. No correlation was found between Thermographic Index (TI) of the arthroscoped knee and graded intra-articular morphology.
When the patients were grouped by final clinical diagnosis, there was a correlation between mean TI, mean plasma viscosity (PV) and diagnosis, although not between diagnosis and morphology.
Synovial appearance is of limited value in differential diagnosis and of less value than thermography as an objective measure of joint inflammation.
