RHEUMATOID FACTOR AND RENAL DISEASE IN SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS

C. F. CORKE

Department of Rheumatology St. Bartholomew's Hospital London EC1A 7BE

It has been postulated that IgM rheumatoid factor protects against nephropathy in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), but other authors have disputed this.

This survey correlates the occurrence of rheumatoid factor (positive latex test) in SLE with parameteis of renal disease.

Rheumatoid factor appears to protect patients from developing proteinuria, but not from renal disease as measured by other parameters.
