One hundred and eight arthroplasties of the knee performed between 1971 and 1975 are reviewed. The incidence of late complications due to loosening, infection or sterile discharge was 23 %. Further surgery to remove or replace the arthroplasty due to complications was required in 24 % of all cases. No particular pre- or peri-operative factor, except possibly the routine use of cement, appeared to increase the likelihood of late complications.
