A standardized method of sacro-iliac scintiscanning utilizing technetium-99m methylene diphosphonic acid is described. A good discrimination between patients with ankylosing spondylitis and controls was obtained by this method. In addition an inverse correlation with the duration of symptoms was found.
It is suggested that this method may be a useful adjunct in the diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis, particularly when radiological changes in the sacro-iliac joints are absent or equivocal. The two-hour period between injection of this radionuclide and scintiscanning has advantages in the investigation of out-patients compared with other established methods requiring longer periods.
