A Study of the Long Term Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis with Benorylate Suspension

Thirty-Nine patients have been studied for periods of up to 13 months in an open assessment of benorylate in rheumatoid arthritis. Thirteen patients received the drug in a daily dose of 6 g. for nine months or longer, while 21 patients received treatmentfor six months or more. Reduction in the severity of both spontaneous pain and pain on movement were more marked in the first six months but this improvement was maintained for the rest of the trial. An objective assessment, the Lansbury Index, showed a gradual and continual improvement for the duration of the study. Only five patients withdrew from the study because of side effects and three because of lack of efficacy. The results show that benorylate was effective and well tolerated over a long period of time by patients with rheumatoid arthritis, and in two-thirds of them it was able to replace completely their previous therapy.
