Relevance of Gastrointestinal Symptoms and Blood Loss after Long Term Treatment with a Salicylate-Paracetamol Ester, A New Anti-Inflammatory Agent (BENORYLATE)

Peter Reizenstein, Anton Döberl and W. Eriksson, Technical Assistance

   Abstract

The iron absorption method was used to estimate possible iron deficiency resulting from any blood loss caused by a salicylate-paracetamol ester (benorylate). A total of 480 g. of the drug was given to each of nine healthy volunteers over the course of two months. In spite of this high dosage only one out of 66 stool guaiac tests and only six out of 66 stool haematests were positive. This blood loss did not cause anaemia, nor iron deficiency detectable by the most sensitive method available.
