Interleukin-1 and Acute Phase Proteins

J.T. Whicher

   Abstract

The acute phase response of inflammation comprises the increase in serum level of a family of liver-denved proteins which appear to have important and diverse functions in the inflammatory process. This physiological response to injury is accompanied by a number of other systemic responses such as fever, leucocytosis and muscle proteolysis. which are probably all mediated by a cytokine or family of cytokines derived from macrophages and some tissue cells known as interleukin-1. There is some evidence to suggest that this response may be defective in some diseases.

KEY WORDS: Interleukin-1, Acute phase proteins
