Interleukin-1: Prospects for Biology

C.A. Dinarello

   Abstract

Polypcplidcs from activated monoevtes and macrophages have altractcd considerable interest as mediators of host responses to infection, injury and various immunological reactions One of these polypcptides(ora family of closely related peptidcs) is intcrlcukin-1 (IL-1) IL-1 has been studied for decades for usability to induce many components of the acute phase response, notably fever, synthesis of acute phase reactants and the redistribution of ammo acids, iron and zinc Currently, many biological activities have been attributed to IL-1 cDNA to human and mouse IL-1 have been cloned and the availability of large quantities of homogeneous rccombinant IL-1 will unquestionably result in the resolution of problems associated with insufficient amounts of purified IL-1 In addition, there will be new directions for IL-1 research and its relationship to clinical disease. In this report, recent developments at the molecular level of IL-1 will be discussed with particular emphasis on implications for future research trends in the biology of IL-1 These include confirmation of the multiple biological activities of IL-1 using rccombinant IL-1. development of sensitive immunoassays for detecting IL-1 in human body fluids, the discovery of other IL-1 genes identification of specific IL-1 sequences which arc required for certain biological effects and testing of potential IL-1 antagonists

KEY WORDS: Interleukin-1, biological effects, Molecular biology
