J. Saklatvala and S.J. Sarsfield

   Abstract

A protein from pig mononuclear leucocytes stimulated with Con A has been purified to homogeneity on the basis of its ability to cause proteoglycan rcsorption in cartilage The protein is a single polvpeptide chain M1 21 000 and pi 4.9 and has been called catabohn Besides its effect on cartilage, the protein also augments mouse thymocyte proliferation and stimulates prostaglandin and collagenasc production in synovia) fibroblasts and chondrocyics It is concluded that this protein is a form of IL-1.
