Rheumatoid arthritis and cardiovascular disease may share similar risk factors

SIR, We read with interest the article by D. Symmons and B. Harrison on risk factors for the development of inflammatory polyarthritis (IP) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) [1]. These authors have recently made several contributions to the search for associations between genetic as well as environmental factors and the development of RA and IP. They conclude by stating that elucidation is needed of the mechanisms by which some of the risk factors that have been identified may mediate the development of IP [1
