Rheumatoid arthritis in ß-thalassaemia trait

SIR, We read with great interest the letter by Montecucco et al. [1]. They concluded that subjects with the ß-thalassaemia (ß-thal) trait have a high prevalence of polyarthritis resembling rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but not of other inflammatory rheumatic diseases, such as connective tissue disease and seronegative spondyloarthrytis. They also stated that the so-called arthritis of the ß-thal trait is probably not a distinct clinical entity, as previously thought, and may be regarded as a mild form of seronegative RA. We reached the same conclusion in our own studies of this topic.
In our original report, published in 1975 [2], we studied the incidence of the ß-thal trait (confirmed by haemoglobin electrophoresis) in 146 RA patients consecutively admitted to the hospital,
